Nuclear energy is currently the only low-carbon baseload energy alternative to fossil fuels. In response to the nuclear crisis in Japan, the policy momentum is shifting towards halting the expansion of domestic nuclear energy, without any serious discussion of impacts on fossil fuel consumption or clean energy innovation. Policymakers should take a more long-view approach to nuclear energy policy by supporting innovation and safety instead the short-sighted approach of halting construction and setting back the entire nuclear energy industry.
