It wasn’t that long ago that the federal Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) was on the verge of fiscal death. But last week’s budget deal allotted new appropriations to allow the agency to continue functioning and expand its innovative work into key cleantech areas. Unfortunately, that allotment was far less of an investment than the nation needs, and the agile, effective agency will likely remain under the gun as FY2012 budget negotiations proceed.
