WASHINGTON - The Obama Administration released a "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights" today. In response, ITIF Senior Analyst Daniel Castro issued the following statement:
"We applaud the Administration for embracing a multi-stakeholder framework for enhancing consumer privacy. Technology companies and online advertisers have made substantial progress over the past year in deploying new tools to enable consumer control and awareness of how their private data is used. As ITIF has previously detailed, self-regulation is an effective and important tool to protect consumers while creating a flexible environment for innovation. Moreover, ITIF has argued that the most important principle for fostering a trusted online environment is enabling consumer choice and transparency. We are pleased to see these two priorities at the top of the list of the proposed privacy bill of rights. It will be important to ensure these rights do not become a regulatory burden on the private sector with little value for consumers. For example, we must promote efforts to ensure consumers can correct inaccurate information that do not impose undue burdens on organizations. We look forward to working with the Administration and the private sector to refine how these principles can best be implemented to maximize benefits to consumers."
