WASHINGTON (September 18, 2013) - Joe Kennedy, the former Chief Economist for the United States Department of Commerce during the George W. Bush administration, has joined the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) as a Senior Fellow. Kennedy will focus on productivity, budget and tax issues.
"Joe Kennedy is a leading thinker in understanding the relationships between firms, markets, and government and how getting this relationship right can better drive innovation and productivity," notes Robert Atkinson President of ITIF. "He will assist us in broadening our research portfolio in a number of key policy areas, and we are happy to have him on board."
For almost three decades Joe Kennedy has been a senior economic advisor in both the private and public sectors with a focus on technology and competitiveness policy. At the Commerce Department, Kennedy served as a senior advisor to the Secretary and coordinated analysis of key policy initiatives. In addition to this role, he has served as Senior Economist for the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, General Counsel for the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Investigations and as a senior executive with the Manufacturers Alliance and the Pew Charitable Trusts.
"I am very pleased to be joining Rob Atkinson and the rest of ITIF," Kennedy adds. "The United States is going through a time of great transition and faces serious challenges including an outdated tax code and unaffordable legacy costs. At the same time new technologies could offer us tremendous benefits if we pursue the right public policies. ITIF had been doing much of the best research on these important issues and I am glad to be part of the team."
