Rob Atkinson, President ITIF, Speaks About the COMPETES Report

As the Commerce Department unveiled a report on U.S. innovation and competitiveness, ITIF hoped it would raise the public awareness of ebbing of U.S. competitiveness.

As the Commerce Department unveiled a report on U.S. innovation and competitiveness, which ITIF had long championed, ITIF President Rob Atkinson said he hoped it would raise the public awareness of ebbing of U.S. competitiveness.

"I hope this is a first step in the process of Washington waking up to the urgent innovation challenge and giving it the same attention as the budget deficit. But we need to do more than merely wake up. We must bound out of our complacency and partisanship as if our future depends on it, because it does," he said.

The report, "The Competitiveness and Innovative Capacity of the United States," was required under the America COMPETES Rauthorization Act of 2010, signed into law by President Obama early last year. ITIF worked with lawmakers from both parties to include the requirement for developing an innovation and competitiveness strategy in the legislation. Atkinson served on a national Innovation Advisory Board, which provided the Commerce Department insights and recommendations for assessing and crafting an innovation strategy.
