Funding for the Department of Energy's breakthrough energy technology program, the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), has been consistently below recommended levels since the agency's creation. vAppropriations for FY2013 and FY2014 are $265 million and $280 million, respectively, which does not even amount to 30 percent of the $1 billion initially proposed by the National Academies of Science and the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Despite these funding challenges, the agency has funded over 280 projects and attracted millions of dollars in follow-on private sector funding.
